San Antonio Aguas Calientes is situated at 1,577 meters elevation above sea level. The people here cultivate corn, beans, vegetables, and coffee. But a vital part of this small community is their famous weaving products. With approximately 8,632 inhabitants, 52% of the population are women, with 60% of them still weaving their customary wear, thanks to the tradition past down from their mothers.
The weaving workshop includes the back strap loom that can be pack if you want to take it home and finished or simply display it as a reminder of the streight is required to mantain over 4000 years of history.
Completing a textile creation could take 9 months or more according to the complexity of the desing and size. Our workshop will develop the skills needed in 3 hours, so we are going to focus on small pieces like a napkin.
This process has almost become a dead tradition. Our mission is to rescue and protect our Maya Technics and Knowledge, thanks to women with great hearts that are willing to share we would be able to commit it.
